Capacity Planning is a generic term used to describe the process of determining the production capacity, and therefore the resources (human, material and/or financial), required to meet a demand. In other words, it is a tool that aligns requirements with the resources needed to meet them, while ensuring the availability and performance of the latter.

In the case of IT projects at ULB, Capacity Planning is managed and used by the IT Project Management Office (PMO) to enable it to monitor both the evolution of the execution of the projects in the institutional IT project portfolio and the start-up of new projects, ensuring the availability of the resources required for each.

The prioritization and Capacity Planning processes come into play particularly when two or more projects need common resources at the same time. In this case, the availability of the necessary human, material and/or financial resources must be checked and allocated to the highest priority project first.
